Santa Barbara Yacht Club's "Yachts of Love" Charity Regatta Benefits New Serenit House

Sunday, Sept. 11, marked a day of remembrance, solidarity and celebration at the Seventh Annual Charity Regatta held at the Santa Barbra Yacht Club and benefiting Serenity House, Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care’s new hospice inpatient facility in Santa Barbara.

Under mild temperatures, calm winds and billowy overcast skies, the activities commenced shortly after noon and the Santa Barbara Yacht Club bustled with activity. Live music poured from the second-floor balcony and guests mingled on the outdoor balcony overlooking the harbor, Stearns Wharf and the Pacific Ocean with scenic mountains beyond. read full article

Community Palliative Care Program Wins Statewide Achievement Award - The Community Palliative Care Program, a collaboration of Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care, Hospice of Santa Barbara and the Cancer Center of Santa Barbara, has been awarded the Outstanding Program Achievement Award by the California Hospice and Palliative Care Association of Sacramento. Started in 2009 and targeting a previously unserved patient population, the Community Palliative Care Program is designed to alleviate suffering and enhance the quality of life for patients and their families who are facing life-threatening illness. read full article

 

Santa Barbara Yacht Club’s Charity Regatta a Benefit for Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care - Robert “R.P.” Richards was well known in the community for his philanthropy and activism. In particular, he was an avid supporter of the hospice movement and never failed to donate use of his 68-foot yacht, Taxi Dancer, to the Santa Barbara Yacht Club’s annual charity regatta benefiting Serenity House, a nonprofit hospice inpatient facility run by Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care. However, it wasn’t until he found himself on hospice last year that he fully appreciated what that support meant. read full article

 

Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care to Merge with Community Home Health - Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care announced Friday it will join forces with Community Home Health in an effort to provide more comprehensive, quality in-home health care to Santa Barbara residents, including those unable to pay. The two nonprofit home health agencies will begin a gradual transition later this month, combining staff and resources to better serve the community. CHH will become part of VNHC’s existing home health department, which has cared for Santa Barbara residents for more than 100 years. Current patient care shall remain uninterrupted during the move. read full article


Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care Celebrates Grand Opening of Serenity House
 - Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care celebrated the grand opening of its new hospice inpatient facility, Serenity House, this week with several receptions honoring donors and local leaders for their ongoing support of the community-funded building project. The new Serenity House will offer patients and their families a residential, home-like setting in natural surroundings where they’ll receive high-quality and individualized around-the-clock care from a team of specially trained doctors, nurses, medical social workers, spiritual counselors, hospice aides and volunteers that support emotional, spiritual and physical needs at the end of life. read full article

 

Tony Papa to Chair Santa Barbara Yacht Club Charity Regatta - Tony Papa has been named chairman of the committee of the Santa Barbara Yacht Club’s 2011 Charity Regatta, which benefits Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care’s Serenity House, a hospice facility. This is Papa’s second time to serve as chairman of the committee. A past commodore of the Santa Barbara Yacht Club, he is a familiar face in philanthropic circles. Papa’s volunteer resumé includes board positions with Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Santa Barbara, the Santa Barbara Youth Sailing Foundation, Wilderness Inquiry’s Adventure Leadership Program and the Girl Scouts Tres Condados. read full article

 

Pat Snyder’s Retirement Party Shows Off Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care’s New Serenity House - With hugs, tears, laughter and many thanks, Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care of Santa Barbara said goodbye to Patricia “Pat” Snyder at a retirement reception held at VNHC’s new Serenity House on May 26. Pat Snyder has built a rich legacy of nonprofit leadership, and grateful colleagues and friends paid tribute to her commitment, enthusiasm and loyalty. Geary has been vice president of Patient Care Services and chief nursing officer for Cottage Health System since 2006. Advance Directives: What Are Your Health Care Wishes?

This year marks the sixth anniversary of Terri Schiavo’s death and the end of a seven-year legal battle over her end-of-life care. In the absence of any documentation outlining this 41-year-old woman’s wishes concerning her own health-care treatment, her family — and ultimately the court — was left to decide for her. This Saturday, April 16, Santa Barbara will join the rest of the country in celebrating National Healthcare Decisions Day. The annual observance is aimed at increasing the number of Americans who have completed an advance directive in which they name the person who will make medical decisions for them in the event they are seriously ill and can’t speak for themselves. read full article

- Janet Lew and Pamela Geremia have been named co-chairs of Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care’s 10th annual Mother’s Day Luncheon, “Honoring and Remembering Our Mothers,” announced Tamara Skov, executive director of the Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care Foundation. The Mother’s Day Luncheon will begin with a silent auction at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 6 at the Coral Casino Beach & Cabana Club, 1260 Channel Drive in Montecito. At this year’s luncheon, Chris Toomey will remember his mother, Constance Toomey Smith, and Maryan Schall will be celebrated as the event’s Honored Mother. read full article


Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care Recognized for Helping Maintain County Trails
- Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care has been recognized by the Santa Barbara Front Country Trails Multi-Jurisdictional Task Force for its ongoing leadership and dedication in helping maintain wilderness trails throughout the county. In 2010, VNHC tackled two Front Country Trails projects including the Jesusita Trail in May and the Rattlesnake Canyon Trail in July. Using standard firefighting tools such as the McLeod and Pulaski, nurses, physical therapists and administrators from the nonprofit worked until dark clearing water bars, restoring tread and removing overgrown vegetation that almost completely blocked the trails. read full article
 

Arlene Stepputat Named Volunteer Coordinator of Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care - Arlene Stepputat has been named Volunteer Coordinator of Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care and will be responsible for coordinating volunteers in Santa Barbara and the Santa Ynez Valley. A familiar face in nonprofit and volunteer circles, Stepputat was program director for the Alzheimer’s Association in Santa Barbara County. She also was an independent consultant for 13 years, offering workshops and training in addition to speaking nationally about service and volunteerism. read full article
 

Mary Pritchard Joins Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care Board - In her volunteer position on the board, local financial professional Mary Pritchard will devote her energy and expertise to help guide policy for VNHC. Mary is a certified public accountant and serves as the corporate controller for Santa Barbara-based Green Hills Software Inc. She received a bachelor’s degree from UCSB and a master’s degree in business administration from San Diego State University. Bobbie Rosenblatt Joins Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care Board - In her volunteer position on the board, retired school teacher and educational therapist Bobbie Rosenblatt will devote her energy and expertise to help guide policy for VNHC. She is a co-founder of the Women’s Council of Sansum Clinic, which annually presents a series of lectures on health-care issues. Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care announces Doctors of the Year honors at Annual Meeting - Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care honored two doctors with its Physician of the Year designation at its annual meeting Thursday, May 20 at Fess Parker’s DoubleTree Resort in Santa Barbara. Dr. Gregg Newman received his title from VNHC’s hospice team, and the home health team recognized Dr. Daniel Craviotto. Both doctors practice in the Santa Barbara area. read full article
 

Dan Greenwald, M.D., Joins Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care Board - In his volunteer position on the board, Dr. Greenwald will devote his energy and expertise to help guide policy for VNHC. He has been a member of the Hematology Oncology Medical Group at Cancer Center of Santa Barbara since 2007 and completed medical school at Stanford University, where he also did all of his post-graduate training, including internship, residency, chief residency and fellowship. read full article

CEO Eileen Bunning to Retire from Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care - Eileen Bunning, chief executive officer of Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care, will retire from her position effective Dec. 31, said Steve Lew, chairman of the VNHC board. Under Bunning’s leadership for the past eight years, the organization achieved extraordinary accomplishments including purchase and construction of the new 18-bed Serenity House. read full article
